LEFEVRE, Charles Henry ,
Dr.
Obituary
Muskegon
Chronicle, Muskegon MI, Saturday, March 5, 1955
From
Prominent Medical Family DR. C.H. LEFEVRE, RETIRED DENTIST, DIES Dr. Charles Henry LeFevre, a
Muskegon dentist for 41 years at the time of his retirement in 1948, and a
member of a medical family prominent here since the lumbering days, died this
morning at his home in Whitehall. Dr. LeFevre, who was 77 years old, Aug. 7, 1954, had been in ill health
since his retirement, but had been seriously ill only a short time. Until his retirement, Dr. LeFevre
had been active in the civic and business life of Muskegon. Even in the last few years he had
remained active in a number of organizations, especially the Timber Trails
Council, Boy Scouts of America, and the Old Newsboys of which he was a charter
member. Since his retirement, he
and Mrs. LeFevre had traveled extensively during the winter months. A brother of Dr. George L.
LeFevre, until his death the dean of the Muskegon County Medical Society, the
dentist also was an uncle to Drs. Louis and William L. LeFevre, of
Muskegon. For many years, Dr.
Henry, as he was known, and Dr. George LeFevre had adjoining offices. Born in
Grand
Isle,
Vt., he was 3 years old when his family moved to Muskegon in 1880. He was educated in the parochial and
public schools, having graduated from Muskegon High School in 1896. While attending school he sold The
Chronicle and in 1893 he had saved enough to take him to the Columbia Exposition
in Chicago. There he obtained a job
in the Belgian section and stayed for seven weeks. Out of school, he served an
apprenticeship with Shaw-Box-Crane as a pattern maker. Later he and Frank Schuler opened
Muskegon’s first job pattern shop. He continued to hold a card in the pattern makers union until 1903. In 1904, Mr. LeFevre sold his interest
in the pattern business and entered the Chicago College of Dentistry, where he
was graduated in 1907. He
immediately started practice here. Dr. LeFevre was an ardent hunter and fisherman and he loved the
water. Until his retirement, the
LeFevre home was at 1276 Lake Shore drive, overlooking Muskegon Lake. Since 1950 he had made his home in
Whitehall, where he also was close to the water. When not hunting or fishing during his
leisure hours over the years, Dr. LeFevre could be found playing cribbage,
another favorite pastime. Always interested in boys, Dr. LeFevre early became a leader in the Boy
Scouts, and retained his interest until the last. He had been a member of the Executive
Council of the Timber Trails Council since 1920, and was president of the
council in 1934 and 1935. In recent
years he had been an honorary member of the Boy Scout boar, an organization in
which his son, Charles H. LeFevre, Jr. is now active. For years Dr. LeFevre headed the
Mercy Hospital staff in the department of dental surgery. He was a member of the American Dental
Society and the State Dental Society as well as the Muskegon County Dental
Society. During his practice he
witnessed the remarkable changes in all phases of the medical field. He seldom missed an annual convention of
the societies. Dr. LeFevre
was a charter member of the Fourth Degree Assembly of the Knights of Columbus,
and in 1927 was grand knight of
what now is the Dan Kennedy Council. He also was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and a Life member of the Muskegon Elks
Lodge. For more than 65
years, Dr. LeFevre was a communicant of St. Jean’s Catholic Church in Muskegon, but since moving to
Whitehall in 1950 he had been a communicant of the St James Catholic Church,
Montague. In 1911, Dr.
LeFevre was married to Eugenie
Jeannot, who died in 1921. In 1923,
he was married to Cora Vos, who was
associated in business with her husband as secretary and dental technician over
the years. The wife survives as
does the son, Charles, an executive of the Sealed Power Corporation, and two
daughters, Mrs. Leo P. Kelly, of Muskegon, and Mrs A. S. Mangione, of Denver, a
sister Mrs. Selina Monahan, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and 18 grandchildren. The solemn requiem funeral
Mass will be sung at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Jean’s. Rt. Rev. Msgr. William E. Fraser will be
celebrant. Burial will be at St.
Mary’s. Third and
fourth degree member’ s of the Knights of Columbus of St Jean’s congregation
will recite the Rosary for Dr. LeFevre at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Pachesny Funeral
Home.

RITES
TUESDAY FOR BELOVED MUSKEGON DOCTOR, LEADER Services or Dr. George L. LeFevre,
78, outstanding Muskegon physician and surgeon and civic leader, who died Friday
night in his home here, will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. in St. Jean Baptiste
church, Rev. Joseph L. Poulin officiating, assisted by a number of other
priests. Internment will be in St.
Mary’s cemetery. Dr.LeFevre
was perhaps the best known and beloved figure in this community for his generous
contributions in time and works over a period of more than
half
a
century to causes of mercy and community betterment. In most towns, perhaps,
there are few persons whose endeavors and personalities cause them to belong in
a real sense to the community. Such
was Dr. George LeFevre. Dr. LeFevre
became widely known in his city, state and nation during his more than 50 years
of practice as a physician and surgeon. He had served the Michigan Medical society as its president and had also
been head of the Muskegon County Medical Society. The long list of his public
service also
is
notable, including that of chief of staff for many years at Mercy hospital, an institution which he helped
obtain for the community; the
Muskegon
County Tuberculosis sanatorium, which he likewise aided in obtaining for this
area, and over whose board of trustees he presided from the opening in 1924
until his death. CITY, COUNTY
PHYSICIAN He helped write the
present Muskegon commission-manager charter and was elected to the original city
commission under that charter, serving five years. He had been Muskegon city physician and
also county physician. Dr.
LeFevre also served in 1937 as co-chairman with John G. Emery, jr., of the
successful centennial celebration in Muskegon. He was president, too, of the Muskegon
Industrial Foundation, aiding in obtaining industries here, and was chairman of
the board of Hackley Union bank from the time it was organized. The Catholic church bestowed the
highest honor available to a layman on Dr. LeFevre in 1942, when he was made a
Knight of St. Gregory by Pope Pius XII. The late
Bishop
Joseph
C. Plagens presided in the colorful rites in St. Jean Baptiste church at which
the physician was invested with the rank of papal knight. When Dr. LeFevre in 1941 observed
his golden anniversary as a physician, he was honored at a testimonial banquet
in Occidental hotel, and received congratulations of Pope Pius XII and physicians from all Michigan. For 16 years Dr. LeFevre was
a member of the state board of registration in medicine. He was a member of the American Medical
association, and of the
Surgeons’
club of Mayo clinic. A year after
the American College of Surgeons was formed, he was admitted to
membership.
CHIEF
EMERITUS Dr. LeFevre was
named emeritus chief of staff of Mercy hospital in 1942 when Dr. Eugene S.
Thornton became chief. He also
served on the Hackley hospital staff. The doctor had been chairman of the Republican county committee. He was a member of the Rotary club,
Elks, Century club, Muskegon Country club, was active in the YMCA, and was a
past grand knight of the Muskegon council, Knights of Columbus. He served as a director also of several
Muskegon industrial firms. He was a
state representative two terms. Above and beyond all his service, Dr. LeFevre became best beloved for his
essential biggness of spirit and personality. He was unafraid, too, to stand and
declare for his convictions. STATE’S OLDEST PHARMACIST Born in a log cabin on Grand Isle
in Lake Champlain, he came to Muskegon with his parents in 1881, and worked in a
drug store, later passing the examinations for registration in pharmacy. At
the
time of his death he was Michigan’s oldest registered pharmacist. He took his medical work in Hahnemann
Medical college, Chicago, and began practice here in 1891. DR. LEFEVRE LEAVES two sons, Dr.
William LeFevre, who was associated with him in practice, and Col. Louis
LeFevre, in the army medical corps, who has seen service in the Pacific war zone
and is now in this country. He leaves his widow, who was Eunice R.
Sexton of Kansas City, Mo.; and whom he married in New York in 1931. His first wife, the former Alice Ducey,
whom he married in 1894, died in 1928. He also leaves a daughter, Alice
Louise, professor of library science at St. John’s university, Brooklyn; three
sisters, who are Sisters Margaret Mary and Mary Alphonsus at Mercy hospital, and Mrs Dennis Monahan of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; and
two
brothers, Dr. C. H. LeFevre, DDS, and Walter LeFevre, both of
Muskegon.

Biography
Born
at Ste.Anne-des-Plaines, Terrebonne, Quebec on Feb. 24th, 1830, the son of Joseph Lefevre Angelique Lapointe. He studied two and a half years with the
Brothers and one and a half years at the College de Montreal.1 After finishing
his apprenticeship he moved to Plattsburgh, New York where he married Eleonore
Labrecque on Oct. 9, 1858. The new
couple settled at Keeseville where they lived for 6 years. Matthias was naturalized as a US citizen
in 1864. In 1865 the family
emigrated to Grand Isle in Vermont. Matthias was named Justice of the Peace in
1874 and two years later the electors send him to the state Legislature ("La
Chambre de l'Etat"). He and his
family were communicants at St Rosa de Lima parish in Grand Isle. In 1881 Mr. Lefevre
and family moved west and settled in Muskegon. He worked in partnership with Mr.
Lanctot, and in 1887 he opened his own shop which is well patronized and was
located at 21 S. 1st St. in Muskegon.1 On Jan15, 1895 Matthias
celebrated the 50th anniversary since he began his apprenticeship as a
cobbler. He continued to work hard
at it despite his 65 years. Six out
of seven days he could be found in his workshop. It was written of him that “he enjoys a
robust health, is very energetic, and performs the activities of a young man.
Truthfully we are convinced in seeing this elderly septagnerian at his bench
that this is not the work that kills man the fastest. His prodigeous vitality comes from his
sobriety, the
moderation
of his habits, and from the regularity of his conduct.”1 Since his arrival in
Muskegon he served on the church committee at St Jean’s for 3 years and “has
filled almost without interruption many of the responsibilities in our societies
and our brotherhoods.”1 Matthias and Eleonore had thirteen children including one renowned
doctor, a dentist and three Sisters of Mercy. Matthias died on …. 1906 of … and is

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CENTURY. (1900) Narcisse Lessard has
been in Muskegon since 1855. He is therefore one of the older citizens of the
city. He lives on Ambrosia Street with his wife (Marie Lafreniere) and their
three youngest sons.
He
was born March 26, 1935 in
Louiseville, Quebec, Canada. His father, Sifroy Lessard was a farmer. His
mother's name was Seraphine Tessier. Narcisse spent a few years on his father's farm following his First Holy Communion. At 18 he got the urge to
travel. He followed the example of many young people and left for the United
States. He came to Muskegon the Summer
of
1855. His first job was work in the saw- mills. After twelve years he was forced
to quit the saw-mill because of ill health. He became a carman, or wagoner which
is his work at present. He owns a good home and lives comfortably. He is 64
years old.
