GOEBEL, John
Obituary
Muskegon Chronicle - Muskegon, MI - July 25,
1938 pg.7 Rites Wednesday For Crash
Victim Services Will Be Held for
John Goebel at Ravenna Church Ravenna, July 25 - Funeral services for John C. Goebel, 67 years old,
prominent Moorland township farmer who was killed Saturday night when his car
plunged into the ditch on a gravel road north of M-46, or Bolt highway, will be
held in St. Catherine's Catholic church in Ravenna at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Burial will be in St. Catherine's, also here.
Mr. Goebel, township justice of
peace for 20 years, treasurer of the Bowen school district and a member of the
Maccabees, was born in Dallansen, Westfalen, Germany, February 22, 1871. He came
to the United States, and to Ravenna, in 1893. He was married to Miss Molly
Zahrt, of Ravenna, in 1893. He
leaves, besides the widow, three sons, Joseph, of Wolf Lake, John, Jr., and
Louis of Moorland township; five daughters, Mrs. Leonard V. Bayne, Mrs. Paul
Gillette and Mrs. John Matson, all of Muskegon; Mrs. John Merten, of Ravenna,
and Miss Ann, at home; and eight grandchildren. Moorland Man and Stranger Motor
Victims
Auto Mishaps Take at Least Nine Lives in Michigan Over Week-end Traffic accidents took the lives
of at least nine persons in Michigan over the week-end, including two in
Muskegon county. The Muskegon
county victims included John C. Goebel, Moorland township farmer, killed
Saturday evening when his automobile went out of control and plunged into a
ditch near Ravenna, and an unidentified man, crushed to death by a trailer early
Sunday at the Laketon avenue carnival grounds.
Nearly home from a day of
threshing, Mr. Goebel, 67 years old, Moorland township justice of peace for the
past 20 years, and a prominent farm resident of the township for 45 years, was
killed a short distance north of Bolt highway and a mile and a half east of
Kelly's corners. Neck Is
Broken His neck broken in the
crash, Mr. Goebel, also treasurer of the Bowen school district and active in the
Caccabees, was the 13th traffic victim of the year in Muskegon county. Driving home alone from the Molski farm
near Moorland, Mr. Goebel apparently lost control of his light sedan, tracks
indicating it swayed from right to left and back to the right side of the road
and into the ditch. Battered, right
side and top of the car and the radiator, smashed against the motor indicated
the car slid along the ditch on its side and finally plowed forward into the
ground. Rear seat cushions torn loose by the impact and huled forward were
believed to have struck the victim, breaking his neck. Found by Irving Whitney and Louis
Goebel, a son, who had arrived home shortly before from threshing and was busy
at the evening chores on the 200-acre farm where he lived with his father, the
victim was rushed to a physician's office at Ravenna, about three miles south,
but was dead upon arrival. Coroner J.J.Kline was called. Deputy Sheriff Glenn
Corey also investigated.

TWO PIONEERS PASS AWAY. Edwin Grow, a pioneer settler of White
River township, died last Monday evening of paralysis after a brief illness,
aged 74 years. Mr. Grow was
stricken last Sunday morning and while he was in the act of dressing himself
fell to the floor unconscious. He
never rallied and from that time he remained in a comatose condition until
he passed quietly away Monday evening. Deceased was a pioneer of this section of the country coming here with
his wife 50 years ago when the virgin forests remained hardly touched. He purchased 320 acres of land from the
government at $1.25 per acre but subsequently sold part of his original
holdings. He cleared the place and
farmed it until his death. He was
born in Vermont May 31, 1830 and was married to Miss Jeffery, his present widow
at Berlin, Mich., in 1854. A family
of 10 children was the fruit of their union, 6 of whom are living--Miss Ida
Grow, Edson, Chas. and Elmer, Mrs. Aug. Lauterberg and Mrs. Henry Ballard. The funeral took place from the M.E.
church at 2 o'clock this afternoon and the remains were followed to their last
resting place in the Montague cemetery by a large concourse of
sympathizing friends.

of his death and was a very active man. His sudden death was a complete and painful surprise to everyone. Funeral services were held at his home
Thursday afternoon, two o'clock. Rev. Killeen officiating clergyman and Wm. Coats undertaker in

GUNN, Mrs. Margaret
MRS. MARGARET GUNN 11/30/02 GUNN, MRS. MARGARET M. Muskegon Mrs.
Margaret M. Gunn, age 73, went to be with her Lord on Friday, November 29, 2002, following a short illness. She was
born June 11, 1929 to David and Bessie Herbert, and lived her entire life in the West Michigan area. Margaret came from humble beginnings. Her family was
broken up by unfortunate circumstances when she was very young, and she spent most of her
youth in a series of foster homes, sometimes doing odd jobs in exchange for room and board. But instead of allowing
the experience to make her bitter, she learned to understand other people and the difficulties and handicaps they
faced. She took those wonderful qualities into her marriage to Gordon Gunn in 1950. She blessed her husband and
six children with patience and unconditional love for the rest of her life. Margaret was a giver who was
always more concerned about her family and friends than she was about herself. She displayed that caring on Dec. 23,
1996, when she went from her husband's funeral in the afternoon, to a department store at night, so she could finish
her Christmas shopping and make sure everyone had a gift under the tree from Mom. Margaret also shared her kindness
with animals, particularly her cats. She treated her four-legged friends with the same respect she showed people.
Besides her two beloved house cats, she provided a home in her garage to strays who found their way to her
doorstep. They started out wild, but by the time they got a dose of Margaret's tender care, they were tame, fat and lovable.
A kitten that was born to one of her ``garage cats'' became terribly ill one day, and Margaret sat up overnight
nursing the tiny creature back to health, before giving it to one of her sons as a special gift. All creatures seemed to
respond to her gentle touch, instinctively knowing |
