Muskegon
News & Reporter, Oct 18, 1870 DROWNED - James Eagan, a sailor on the scow Selma was drowned at Port
Sherman last Thursday. The scow was
being towed out when it was discovered that she was running afoul the dock, and
Eagan and another man ran aft to see what was wrong. The deck being slippery and without any
railing by which to check his speed, Eagan ran off into the river. All efforts to save him proved
ineffectual.-- The body was
recovered and an inquest held by Justice Weller Friday, and his remains interred
in the city cemetery.

Mrs. Anna Mitchell
Earley, aged 43, an inmate in the Northern Michigan State hospital died
yesterday morning at Traverse City. The remains were brought here for interment.
Mrs. Earley was born
in Three oaks, Mich. Later she
moved to Union, Ore. and then to Muskegon, where she lived for a number of
years.
She leaves one
brother, Roy Mitchell of this city and one son, Guy, of Malcolm, Ia. and one
daughter, Mrs. Guy Church of Union, Ore.

Gertrude Emmons, wife
of F.G. Emmons, formerly of this
city, died at her home, 139 Griggs street, S.W., Grand Rapids, Monday morning
after a short illness. She is
survived by her husband, One son, Romazo, he rmother, Mrs. S. M. McNitt and one
borther, John A. Price, of Ravenna. Mrs. Emmons was a member of the Mizpah Chapter No. 89, Order of the
Eastern Star. The funeral service
will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the M.E. church at
Ravenna.

Dorothy Ferguson, in Muskegon on March 13, 1991 [sic] and married Robert L.
Ericksen on Feb. 10, 1967. Until
her retirement in 1976 she had been employed for 32 years at Sealed Power
Corp. She was a member of Northside
Sr. Citizens and a former member of the Muskegon Heights Eagles. SURVIVORS
Husband,
Robert; 2 half sisters, Mrs. Frederick (RoseMary) Blanche & Mrs. Robert
(Kathleen) Erb and half brother, Charles Ferguson all of CA; aunt & uncle,
William & Alice Putney of Fremont; niece, Judith Whaley of Cincinnati, OH

ALFRED EVANS, LONG ILL, DIES Alfred
Thomas Evans, 74 years old, former cabinetmaker at the Brunswick-Balke-Collender
Company, died last evening at his home, Continental street. He had been ill
about six weeks. Born in England, Jan 17, 1879, Mr. Evans was brought when a
year old to the United States to live in Greenville, and came to Muskegon 59
years ago from Grand Rapids. In 1922 Mr. Evans moved to Grand Rapids, but
returned to Muskegon 19 years ago. He was employed at Brunswick until 1946.
Mr. Evans was married to Elizabeth Day, Aug. 4, 1910 at Grand Rapids. He
attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Surviving are his wife; one daughter,
Mrs. Violet Gunn, Muskegon; three sons, Raymond Evans, Grant; Robert D.
Evans and Kenneth A., both of Muskegon; one brother, Edward Edwards, in
England; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Family present 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Dan was born in Muskegon April
14, 1952, and was a life time resident of this area. His SURVIVORS include
his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Kenneth (Grace) Evans of Muskegon, three sisters,
Mrs. Ype (Judy) Salverda of San Diego, AA, Mrs. James (Jean) Bromley of
Costa Mesa, CA., and Mrs. Richard (Louella) Meyers of Nunica; 5 brothers,
Lee Evans of Costa Mesa, CA, Clyde Johnson and Ronald Johnson both of
Holton, Jack Johnson of Rothbury, and Douglas Evans of Holton; his maternal
grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Ralph Boss of Holton; and nieces and nephews.

home, Wednesday night, after several weeks illness. Born in Belding on July
25, 1883, Mrs. (sic) Evans came when eight years old with his parents to
Muskegon and had lived here since. He was employed by the Morton
Manufacturing company. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Edward Harken, and a
half brother, Alfred Evans, both of Muskegon, and a stepbrother, Edward
Edwards, in England.

EVANS, MRS. ELIZA M. 1332 S. Carr
Rd. Mrs. Eliza Evans passed away Saturday in St. Petersburg, Fla. After a
brief illness, age 82. Born March 28, 1889 at Ludington and came to Muskegon
70 years ago. The formed Eliza May Day, she married Alfred Evans in 1911 at
Muskegon and Mr. Evans died in 1953. Mrs. Evans was a communicant of St.
Thomas Catholic Church and belonged to the Golden Age Club. Survivors
include three sons, Raymond Evans of Grant, Robert Evans of Norton Shores
and Kenneth Evans of Muskegon; and one daughter, Mrs. Warren (Violet)
Fredericks of Twin Lake; one sister, Mrs. Stephen (Rudy) Chiplis of St.
Petersburg, Fla; 27 grand children and 43 great-grandchildren. A funeral
Mass for Mrs. Evans will be sung Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic
Church, the Rev. Donafus Grunich O.F.M. as celebrant with interment in
Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Walburn Funeral Home
beginning Tuesday at 7 p.m. and where they may meet the family Tuesday at 7
to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A rosary will be recited
at the funeral home Wednesday at 8 p.m. --Walburn

WHITE PLAGUE FATAL MRS. ALFRED T EVANS DIES AFTER
ILLNESS OF SIX WEEKS Mrs. Alfred T. Evans, died this morning at her home, 30
Elizabeth street, after a six weeks illness with consumption. She was 26
years of age and was born in Chicago, coming here with her parents in 1885.
She was married to Alfred T. Evans August 22, 1900. The deceased leaves,
besides her husband, one son, Raymond, aged 8, a daughter, Violet, six years
of age, her parents, Mr. And Mrs. J. Stevens, 32 Elizabeth street; Mrs.
Wheeler Hancock, 345 Wood avenue, and Miss Cora Stevens, sisters; George and
Edward Stevens, brothers. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 1
o’clock at the Wood avenue M. E. church, Rev. C. S. Strickland conducting
the services.

Mrs. Jennie Eldon Evans, 88 years
old, a resident of Muskegon county for nearly half a century, died last
night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward Harken, 766 W. Grand avenue,
following a short illness. Born at Dover, Del. Aug. 15, 1850, Mrs. Evans
remained there until she was 10 years old. After living in several cities,
the family settled in Greenville where she was married to Thomas Evans in
1882. Three years later the couple came to Muskegon. Mr. Evans died last
Aug. 17. She was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist church. Surviving are
her daughter; a son David L. Evans of Muskegon; two step-sons, Alfred of
Muskegon, and Edward, of England; eight grandchildren and 16
great-grandchildren.

Thomas A. Evans, 88 years old, died
today at his home, 1969 Huizenga street, following a short illness. For many
years Mr. Evans was an employee of the Grand Trunk railway, having been a
Muskegon resident for more then 47 years. He was born in Wales, England,
Feb. 14, 1850, and came to the United States when a young man. He made his
home in Greenville, where he was married to Virgina Covey several years
later. In 1891, Mr. Evans moved with his wife to Muskegon and had since
lived here. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Alfred and David, of
Muskegon; a step-son, Edward of England; one daughter, Mrs. Edward Harken,
of Muskegon; a sister, Mrs. Martha Hinks, and a brother, William Evans, both
of England; eight grandchildren, and 15 great- grandchildren.

EVERETT, MR. CARL 292 Irwin Mr. Carl Everett, age 67, passed away
Thursday afternoon at Hackley Hospital. Born in Hickman, Kentucky, he came to Muskegon in 1944. He married Irene Jackson in March of
1943, who survives him. He was
employed at Lakey Foundry Corp. up until 1965, a member of the U.A.W - C.I.O. of
Muskegon and was of Methodist faith. Along with his wife survivors include 2 daughters, Martha Simpson of
Muskegon, and Mrs. Doyle (Olene) George of Fulton, Kentucky; 11 grandchildren, 6
great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Jack, of Muskegon, Bill of Hickman, Kentucky, and Mac of
Louisiana; four sisters, Margaret Haney of Fulton, Kentucky, and Mrs. Mrs.
Riley Reeves, Mrs. Fred Clark, and Mrs. Leonard Carr all of Hickman,
Kentucky. The service for Mr.
Everett will be held Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. from the Clock Chapel with
the Rev. Maxwell Vague officiating. Interment will be made in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the Clock Funeral
Home where they may meet with the family from 7 to 9 o'clock Saturday evening
and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 o'clock on Sunday.
