DAVID,
Elizabeth (Mrs.) Graves
Obituary
is
one of the oldest early settlers living in Muskegon today. Mrs. David who came
to Muskegon 72 years ago at the age of 11 years, remembers when it was a
village, with no business section on Western Ave., her own home having been in
those early days, at the corner of Western avenue and First street, where Union
National Bank now stands. Mrs. David experienced with other pioneers, the rise, height, and wane of
the great lumbering industry in this section, and has seen with satisfaction its
emergence from years of business depression into the prosperous industrial city
which it now is. Mrs. David was
born at Redfern, NY, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Graves, and was one of
seven children, three sons, Edward, Louis
and George and four daughters, who
afterward became Mrs. Alex Marcoux, Mrs. Joseph LeTarte, Mrs. Larrie Le Veque, and
Mrs. David. Mrs. David recently
celebrated her 83 (?) birthday anniversary at her home at 1718 Lake Shore drive.
her children are: Mrs. H.B. Richardson, Arthur and Edward David, all of
Muskegon
I
am not related to this person but I got the second part of an article written
about her on a copy of one of my families obits. The first part of the article
carries the title and also a photo of Elizabeth David. You may find this article
in the Muskegon People's Scrapbook #2 at the Hackley Public Library. I'm not
sure which page it was but some of the dates that show up on the paper I have
are from 1928-1929. Sorry I couldn't get dates off from my copy but I thought
this was an interesting little story and it contained a lot of surnames that
might help someone.

GH
fire claims three lives The fire
was reported at 5:11 a.m. Sunday.
By Terry Judd CHRONICLE STAFF
WRITER WITH LOCAL AND WIRE REPORTS
GRAND
HAVEN - Investigators were combing through the debris of a two-story home on
Grant Street this morning looking for clues to the cause of an early morning
fire Sunday that killed three people. Joshua Andrew McClain, 27, 820 Grant, his stepbrother Bret Allen
DeCoster, 23, of Big Rapids, died in the blaze. The name of the woman who also
died in the fire had not been released by the Grand Haven Department of Public
Safety as this morning, but friends identified the woman as Courtney Cunic of
Grand Haven. Travis Stone, 22, who
roomed with McClain for the past year in the home and escaped the blaze, said
the flames were intense and spread with incredible speed through the main floor.
Stone had been sleeping in the basement when his girlfriend woke him up because
of a commotion upstairs, made by two friends who had discovered the fire. He said when he went upstairs to
investigate, he found a raging inferno in the main floor bedroom. "I opened the door (to the first floor)
and walked into a furnace. It was indescribable," Stone said. Stone and two others were able to
escape. They were unable to rescue McClain, who was asleep in the living
room. “This is really sad," said
Stone. "Three fatalities. Three young people with their whole life ahead of
them." Deputy Public Safety
Director Richard Szczepanek said the name of the female victim would not be
released until an autopsy was performed today and dental records examined. Based
on interviews with survivors, investigators have a name and have contacted the
woman's parents. All three victims
were found by public safety officers on the first floor of the Grant Street
home. At least five others were in the home at the time the fire was reported at
5:11 a.m. and were able to escape. Please see FIRE 2A

Joshua
McClain is the son of Weldon McClain, 4114 Towner, Muskegon, and Christine
McClain, also of the Muskegon area. Bret DeCoster is the son of Daniel DeCoster
of 2031 N. Getty in Muskegon. His mother, Linda McClain, is married to Weldon
McClain. According to reports,
DeCoster and Cunic were asleep in a bedroom usually used by McClain. McClain was
asleep in the living room. Three others in the home either were sleeping in the
living room or in a basement bedroom. Several of those in the house had earlier attended a wedding reception
for a relative. Szczepanek said
investigators from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department and the Muskegon Fire
Department were sifting through the charred home today to determine where the
fire started and for a cause. Survivors say the fire apparently started in the
main floor bedroom. Stone bristled
at media reports of burning candles being a possible cause of the fire. He said
there were no candles being burned. Szczepanek said the investigation will cover all possible causes,
including arson. "This is standard
procedure," he said. "You look at everything. Because we don't have many fires
like this, we are bringing in other personnel so we can have collective minds
look at the entire scene." The
detection dog from the Muskegon Fire Department was requested this morning to
assist at the investigation. The dog is trained to sniff out any flammable
liquids that may be present at fire scenes. Szczepanek said it was the first fire
fatality in the city in at least 10 years and perhaps longer. Szczepanek said it
has been at least three decades since the city experienced a multiple fatality
house fire.
Early
morning blaze Szczepanek said
public safety officers were notified of the fire around 5:11 a.m. Sunday and
found the center of the first-floor section of the two-story home on fire.
Officers found McClain immediately on the first floor. He was pulled from the
burning home and rushed to North Ottawa Community Hospital, where he later was
pronounced dead. Officers later
discovered DeCoster and the woman also on the first floor. They were pronounced
dead at the scene. The tenant in the upstairs apartment, Daniel Schosso, escaped
without injury. Six years ago,
Schosso lost a portion of his left leg when he was hit by a train. He could not
be reached for comment. Szczepanek
said smoke was pouring from the home when fire units arrived. "When we arrived
we found a lot of smoke from the upstairs and two rooms on the main floor fully
engulfed," he said. Szczepanek said
investigators are not sure where the fire started in the home. Because of the
age of the structure, the fire quickly spread to the upstairs. "This fire was typical in homes of this
vintage," he said. "Once the fire is out of the area of origin, it can spread
quickly to the attic." But in an
interview this morning, Stone said the fire apparently started in the main floor
bedroom. Stone said one of the persons asleep in the living room, Spencer
McIlroy, woke up to the smell of smoke and spotted flames beneath the closed
bedroom door. McIlroy kicked the door open and was confronted by a wall of flame
as Stone was coming up from the basement. "It was the most horrible thing I'd seen in my life," Stone said. "It
sounded like someone had a jet airplane parked in his room. Debris was flying
out the door. It wasn't like the fires in the movies where you run back in. You
couldn't get close." Stone said he
did not know McClain was still in the home. Stone pushed his girlfriend and two
friends from the apartment. But heavy flames kept them from returning. Stone said the heat was so intense,
"everything was melting, like gum on a sidewalk." Stone foot was burned by
material dripping from the ceiling. "It was a solid wall of flame when the door was kicked open," he said.
"It took 10 seconds, if that long, for the whole living room, kitchen and
everything to catch fire." Someone
tried to wake up McClain, who was sleeping on a couch. "He was shaking Josh,
punching him in the arm, (saying) 'Hey dude, wake up.' But it was get out in
five, 10 seconds or there would of been four more names on that (fatality)
list," Stone said. Close
friends Melvin DeCoster of Holland,
Bret DeCoster's grandfather, visited the scene of the fire Sunday. He said
although Bret DeCoster and Joshua McClain were stepbrothers, they acted very
much like brothers. "You would
swear they were brothers," he said. "They were that close." Friends described the two stepbrothers
as great friends. "They were always laughing and just made people happy. They
were fun to be with," said friend Michael Pollack. The family is planning a double funeral
service for the stepbrothers. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday
at the Sytsema Funeral Home, 737 Apple, Muskegon. The funeral will be 1 p.m.
Wednesday at the Central Assembly of God, 869 Home, Muskegon, with the Revs. Jim
Winters, Philip McClain and Curtis McClain officiating. According to Melvin DeCoster, both
Joshua McClain and Bret DeCoster were graduates of Reeths-Puffer Schools. Bret DeCoster was a graduate of Grand
Valley State University and was a special education teacher with Big Rapids
Public Schools and also coached soccer. He also wanted to develop a career
working with special education students, friends said. Joshua McClain was employed at IVC
Industrial Coating Inc., 1855 Industrial Parkway, and roomed with Stone, 22, at
the Grant Street house. McClain and
Stone had been friends since Stone was a senior in high school. Stone said he
and DeCoster were like brothers, meeting and befriending one another when they
worked at a music store in downtown Muskegon. "We worked together and every weekend
we'd hang out. No matter what was wrong, they were the guys who'd cheer you up.
They were irreplaceable," Stone said. [Eric Hendel of Grand Haven knew Joshua McClain and Stone and almost
attended the party at the home Saturday night. "I drove by and saw a bunch of cars," he
said, visiting the fire scene Sunday. "I knew they were getting a band together.
Instead, I went over to a friend's home." Hendel and his father, Mark, who also was at the scene, worked with
several of those attending the party at IVC Industrial. Through their work
contacts, several of those at the party formed the rock n' roll band Klorine and
were scheduled to perform next week at a Muskegon night club, Eric Hendel
said.]* The fire destroyed the
home, which has been owned by Clyde Hendrick Realty since 1975. Late Sunday
morning, fire crews continued to hose down parts of the structure. They had been
assisted by fire units from Ferrysburg, Grand Haven Township and Robinson
Township. [Ed Todd, who lives
across the street at 809 Grant, said there had been a party at the home earlier
in the evening, but the group had quieted down by Sunday morning. He said he
first was alerted to the fire when he heard a muffled "foom" and looked out the
window. There he saw two men and a
woman sitting on the curb. "I
thought these guys were getting ready to set off fireworks," he said. "Then I
heard sirens of three police cars. I didn't even realize the home was on fire
until they drove up."]* Stone and
his friends plan to hold a benefit concert on Mother's Day at Out of Bounds,
2967 Henry, Roosevelt Park, with their band to help pay for the funerals. [Neighbor Tammy Potter, 706 VerHoeks,
described the tenants of the home as "nice, well-dressed kids" who "pretty much
went to school all week and had a a party on the weekends." She said she noticed
at around 2 a.m. there was a party at the home. Viola Hall, 808 Grant, said the current
tenants never were a problem in the neighborhood. She said she did not know them
by name, but knew they were forming a band. "There have been so many in and out of
that house, we never get to know them very well," she said. Three sisters who grew up in the home
visited the fire scene Sunday morning. Marty VanderMeiden Klein said her family
had owned the home for five generations before it was sold in 1975. She and her sisters - Sally Kemme and
Nancy Hitsman - spent the morning looking up at the burned structure and
remembering growing up there. Crews carried out two stools that their father had
rescued from the former Pentagon Restaurant on Seventh Street after it
burned. "I can't believe those
stools were still there and survived a second fire," Klein
said.]*
